When it comes to home security the windows in your house are an obvious weak point that thieves and other criminals will target in order to get into your home. Windows are made of glass and are far easier to break than doors since glass shatters easily if struck with even moderate levels of force. So all a criminal really has to do to get into your home quickly is to break a large window and then they are in. They will probably be in and out too fast for them to have much of a chance of being caught, which means that they are going to be keeping what they stole from you. Believe it or not if this is the kind of break in you have then you have gotten away easy. Imagine what would happen if some lunatic broke into your home at night while you were asleep. Think of the damage he could do and how badly your family could be hurt. If you are serious about home security then addressing the inherent weakness if windows and finding ways to make them more secure should be a top priority.
BDF S8MC Window Film
One of the best things you can do to make your windows as secure as possible is to eliminate their weak point, the glass that makes them so easy to break through. Now you could cover your windows with plywood, and that would certainly make them more secure, but it's not a realistic option. Instead you should use clear window security film. This is a type of security film that is designed to hold the glass in your window together. So when the bad guy shows up and hits it with his crowbar the glass still breaks, but instead of falling to the ground in hundreds of shattered pieces the security film holds it together. So instead of being able to get through your window they are trapped outside. As we all know criminals don't like to get caught, so once he makes a lot of noise by hitting your window, chances are pretty good he's taking off quickly.
John Sterling Window Guard Bars
While using window bars may not be as aesthetically pleasing as the clear window film, it is a very effective barrier that you can put on your windows to make your overall home security better. On top of being an actual barrier against criminals it's also an effective deterrent, and yes there is a difference. A barrier is a physical object that blocks the path of something. A deterrent is something that will make a home less appealing to anyone thinking about breaking into it. Criminals aren't looking for a challenge, they are looking for the easiest house they can get into and get out of quickly. When they see the bars on your windows they probably will decide to move on to the next house instead of messing with yours.
Master Lock Dual Function Security Bar
If you decide that you don't like the look of putting window bars on your window there are still other things you can do to make the window more secure. One of those things is to use a window security bar to keep your window locked in place with a much more secure locking system than regular window locks provide. Please keep in mind that if you want to use this type of window lock you also need to reinforce the window itself to make it harder to break. After all having a window frame that is securely in place won't do you a lot of good if you can just knock the glass out with a hammer. I would personally recommend the Master Lock Dual Function Security Bar. It's easy to install, easy to adjust, and works very well at keeping a window securely closed.
GE Personal Security Window Alarm
If you like the idea of having an electronic alarm system, but don't like the idea of paying a security company every month to monitor it, then there are options available to you. One option is a window alarm that uses a siren if the window is opened. While this doesn't provide the same level of protection as an alarm company, it is much less expensive and also generally quite effective. The first thing that a window alarm will do is let you know if someone is breaking in when you are home. This is by far the most important function that it has. You want to be woken up if there is an intruder breaking in when you are asleep because you have no way of knowing how dangerous this person is. The second thing that window alarms like this will do is scare most burglars off even when you aren't home. A loud siren draws a lot of attention, and that's one thing no criminal likes. If you are interested in an inexpensive window alarm I would recommend this one GE Personal Security Window Alarm.
Other Steps You Can Take
While this should go without saying always keep your windows locked and in good repair. The window security bar mentioned directly above is a great way to keep your window locked, but only if it's consistently used. Other things you can do to keep your windows more secure is to use the landscaping in your yard as a deterrent. You should keep trees trimmed so that there is a clear view of your windows, and you should also think about planting thorn bushes or cactus under windows to make them more challenging to get to. While these steps won't keep someone out they do work as effective deterrents and can be a solid part of your home security plan. Keep in mind that there is nothing you can do to keep out a criminal that really wants to get in. They could spend a lot of time casing your house, looking for vulnerabilities, and then ultimately figuring out a way in. But criminals are not stupid and if they see a home that has been fortified they probably don't want to mess with it. This will get them to move along in most cases and make someone else their victim.
